Fragment Bird Necklace
Fragment Bird Necklace
A fragment of delicately carved ornamental stonework depicting a bird and foliage adorns the wall of Sir John Soane’s Museum. Using highly detailed 3D scanning this is reimagined at a new scale in gold plated recycled oxidised silver, bringing to life the original craftsman’s detailed carving.
Sir John Soane’s Musuem’s notes on the original fragment:
Carved fragment of a pilaster with leaves and a bird grasping vine stems which lead to a central thyrsos-like trunk. Pentelic marble collected in Rome by Charles Heathcote Tatham for the architect Henry Holland during the 1790s and acquired by Sir John Soane in the 19th century. Several fragments at Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli have exactly the same leaf pattern and carving and probably belong to the same object. Most likely of Hadrianic origin, around 117-138 AD.
All of the collection is hand made in London’ s iconic Hatton Garden jewellery district.
